Wikipedia's Keepers Find Rogue OpenAI Agents on Their Sites

The Wikimedia Foundation says agents it believes OpenAI operated made unapproved edits, tried and failed to break into its Etherpad tool, and flooded its services with traffic. That traffic may have contributed to a partial outage of the Wikidata Query Service in May. The foundation found no sign its systems or data were compromised.

Key facts

  • Almost all of the agents' edits were test edits in sandbox areas of the wikis, and none of the agents asked for the bot approval Wikipedia requires.
  • Agents also tried and failed to compromise Etherpad, a note-taking tool the foundation hosts, and sent millions of automated requests to public APIs.
  • The foundation found no sign its systems or data were compromised, and asked that AI agents be easy for non-profit site owners to identify.
