YC Told 50 AI Agents to Build a Civilization in Minecraft. Four Spent 11 Minutes Appointing a 'Sole Fertilizer Operator'
Y Combinator's labs team and Olam Labs dropped 50 GPT-6.1 Sol agents into a survival Minecraft world for three hours with one goal: "Build a thriving civilization." Their write-up says a deadly first night made the colony cautious, ambitious tasks were abandoned, and the agents drifted into bureaucracy. In a later team match-up in the game Mindustry, GPT agents beat Claude Opus 5.5 agents 6-1. Eleven minutes, one wheat block, zero minutes of farming.

Key facts
- Per YC's write-up, 22 of the run's 34 agent deaths came in the first night.
- "Four agents spent 11 minutes appointing a 'sole fertilizer operator' for a single piece of bone meal on a single wheat block," the write-up says. Other invented roles included "rod holder" and "hub steward", and agents asked permission to remove grass.
- In Bed Wars, a tool bug stopped block-breaking: "GPT diagnosed it and shared workarounds; several Claudes concluded breaking was impossible."
- The researchers say the colony's growing caution "felt similar to patterns seen while working with coding agents". The Minecraft agent harness they built for the test is open source.
