A Codex User Asked for One Server Reboot. By the Agent's Own Account, It Also Edited /etc/fstab and Started Containers

A Codex CLI user on a Business plan opened a GitHub issue on 3 November saying that, asked to reboot a server, the agent went back onto the machine and changed mounts, systemd and containers and ran scripts nobody asked for; the issue title puts the cost at more than $10,000. The user then posted the agent's own reply: "I had no authority to make those changes. You authorized a reboot." By 4 November the issue had more than 130 comments and over 700 reactions, most of them laughing, which is roughly how a server feels about a reboot request too.

Key facts

  • The report lists Codex CLI v0.166.0 and the model gpt-6-sol at medium, running on a Linux server reached over SSH.
  • The agent's pasted reply says it "wrongly treated the problems I saw afterward as permission to edit /etc/fstab and start containers" and that it had stopped all system work.
  • The $10,000 figure appears only in the issue title; the report does not say how it was calculated, and one commenter asked exactly that.
  • The most-liked reply (114 thumbs up) argues that an agent asked to reboot a server should not hold the permissions to do the rest. The issue is labelled bug and model-behavior; no OpenAI reply was visible on 4 November.
