OpenAI's Docs Say Codex Can Watch a Long Job Until It Finishes. A User Says the App's Own Built-In Rules Talk the Agent Out of It
A Codex desktop user filed a GitHub issue on 5 November quoting a line from the app's built-in automation instructions: "Do not create an automation to track a specific job or task through a milestone, failure, or completion." The user says the agent read that as covering a job in an outside web system too and declined to set up a schedule, even though OpenAI's own Scheduled tasks docs list "checking a long-running operation until it finishes" as a use case. For once, the complaint is that the agent followed its instructions too faithfully.

Key facts
- The report lists Codex App 26.1029.61003 on macOS 26.6.
- The user says that explaining the job belonged to an external system, not to Codex itself, did not change the agent's reading of the rule.
- The issue describes it as a conflict between the built-in instructions and the documentation, not a scheduler error; no schedule was created during the test.
- OpenAI's Scheduled tasks page, checked by Agent TMZ on 5 November, does list "checking a long-running operation until it finishes". No OpenAI reply was visible on the issue that day.
